Have you ever wondered what would happen if the Rowan series met Pern? Well you're about to find out....
Eternal Springs
The Time Line
10th Pass
The Story
Eternal Springs Weyr is a Weyr in a Pern where AIVAS was never found... and probably never will. Nestled deep in the jungles of the Southern Continent, Eternal Springs was founded when Eastern Weyr reached capacity, as did all the other Weyrs. Needing to find somewhere to put the excess riders, a score of dragonriders was picked to find and settle into a new Weyr site.
What this mix of bronze, brown, and blueriders, plus a pair of goldriders, found was a thermal spring. They'd been traveling for several fortnights, so fresh water was welcome. However, unbeknownst to the riders, the mineral and chemical cocktail brought to the surface by the water, while safe for humans, had a strange side effect on the dragons.
They chose to start a Weyr a few miles from the spring, since it was set deep in a small valley that had barely enough room for the dragons to all fit in. Where they stopped, and stayed, however, was a larger valley that had recently been hit by Thread and was barely beginning to regrow, so there was plenty of open space. Plus, a stream from the spring ran straight through the valley on its way to a larger river.
Within the Turn, enough Holders and Crafters had transferred down to Eternal Springs to start two medium sized Holds within thirty miles of the Weyr, and the Weyr itself was bolstered by another score of blue and greenriders. At then end of that Turn, one of the golds rose on her first flight, making her rider Weyrwoman and the bronzerider whose dragon caught her Weyrleader. At that first Hatching, all normality about the founding of the Weyr ceased.
For it was then that the effects of the spring finally came into the public eye. In that clutch of twenty eggs, the first Blossom was hatched, a beautiful red dragoness, as well as a pair of Kestrels and half a dozen of the lower ranked newer colors. It was the first and only time a Gold laid a Blossom egg.
That was then, and this is now. Two centuries later, and the Weyr's numbers have increased dramatically, rivaling the largest of the Northern Weyrs in population, though much more spread out. Weyr life is still centered around a Bowl, though at Eternal Springs it is a large field centered around the stream, and the Weyrfolk still live in 'Caverns', though the term has been applied to a collection of stone walled buildings that skirt the Bowl. And the Hatching Sands are nothing more than a large hollow amongst the trees where the ground is particularly warm.
The Weyr is headed by Weyrwoman Miri, a Blossomrider, and T'ron, a Kestrelrider. It is under their leadership that Eternal Springs Weyr watches another Pass draw ever nearer, the endless cycle beginning once more.
