The great pirate, Gol D. Roger was smiling.
He was smiling as his unfaltering gaze fell upon the crowd of civilians, delinquents, and wannabe-pirates, watching them cheer in delight or shout in protest at the prospect of his inevitable death. There was no fear in his eyes. No doubt. No regret.
The Pirate King held the expression of a contented and happy man.
And why was that?
Because he knew that his dream will go on beyond death. It wasn't going to end, for as the blades came down on him, the golden rays of a new era rose from his cold grave. In this new era came an age where freedom was the most important thing any man could have, and the sea was the very thing that concretized this freedom. Sails unfurled, and flags with skulls and crossbones were raised. With the winds by their side, ships left their safe harbors and pushed through the blue waters, moving swiftly towards their dreams.
The great Pirate age has begun.x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x
Twenty years had passed since the Pirate King died, and still, the Pirate age shows no sign of dying down. In fact, it's at the summit of its existence, where great names and strong men appeared one after the other, chasing after but one dream: One Piece.
The ultimate treasure, left behind by the Pirate King in the solitary island of Raftel, found at the very end of the most dangerous ocean of the world; the Grand Line.
But pirates weren't the only ones who set this era in rough seas. Fierce warriors of justice from the Navy exist too, devoting their lives for the purpose of eradicating the "scum" of the seas, which they see as the pirates. Polished and strengthened by strict discipline and relentless training, these marines will stop at nothing to end the lives of these foolish rascals, the way they did with Roger two decades ago.
That's not all. For aside from these marines, there are also ruthless vigilantes that roam the streets and seas of the world. Bounty hunters. Civilians with the right to carry lethal weapons for the sake of earning a living out of every criminal carcass they deliver to the Navy's gates. These guys are not bound by the law as much as the marines are, making them much more of a threat.
These three are not the only ones that bring a whole aria of colors into this grayscale. Fishmen, revolutionaries, mafia gangs, and other groups are part of the bigger picture, all of them chasing after their own dreams and aspirations.
And in the process, they end up clashing against one another.x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x
